Challenge Exams

  • The Department of World Languages at Boise State University offers Challenge Exams in the following languages: Arabic, ASL, Basque, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Latin, and Spanish. For more information about the process, dates and prices click the tab below.
  • For all other languages, click on the BYU and NYU Challenge Exams tab.

Please Note:

You must have completed a minimum of 12 credits at Boise State and be currently enrolled in order to challenge a course. 

WL Challenge Exams

You must complete Steps 1-5 before taking a Challenge Exam.

Step 1

Take a Placement Exam or show transcript of successfully completed language course.  For French, German, and Spanish Placement Exams you can pay the $20.00 fee, take the exam, and receive your results immediately in one location in the Simplot Micron Academic Success Hub (SMASH) Building, second floor and the exam fee is $20. For placement in Arabic, contact Isam Ali; for ASL, contact Davina Snow; for Basque, contact Nere Lete; for Chinese, contact Sharon Wei; for Japanese, contact Tetsuya Ehara; for Korean, contact Yookyung Lee  yookyunglee@boisestate.edu and for Latin, contact Karen Wadley (see below for Challenge Exam Dates).

Step 2

Take placement results to the challenge exam administrator (see below for contact information).

  1. Determine the number of courses you will challenge.
  2. Schedule test date.

Step 3

Complete the Credit for Prior Learning form in the WL Office, L-140B.  The office staff will record accounting codes and the challenge fee amount.  The cost is $50 per class.

Step 4

Pay the challenge exam fees through this link. Please make sure to visit the World Languages front office before completing this stephttps://secure.touchnet.com/C20444_ustores/web/store_main.jsp?STOREID=144&SINGLESTORE=true

Only pay for the specified amount that was listed in your Credit for Prior Learning form. Ensure the office staff has received your payment. All paperwork and payment must be finalized and turned in to the administrator at least 2 days prior to test date. The exam will not be given without all required forms and payment.

Step 5

Bring your Boise State ID with you to the scheduled time for your exam.

Step 6

After the exam is graded, pick up exam results from the WL office, L-140B.  The WL office will turn in all challenge grades to the Registrar by the semester deadline.

BYU and NYU Challenge Exams

Brigham Young University and New York University have language exams available to earn Credit For Prior Learning at Boise State University. Click on the links to find out more information about how to order and take a test through BYU or NYU.

►  Brigham Young University challenge exams can be taken to earn up to 12 credits at Boise State University.

►  New  York  University challenge exams can  be  taken  to earn up to 16 credits at Boise State University.
